ABOUT SCOPEBOY.COM

news flash!

Due to my electronic music project getting some good gigs lately, I've decided to shift the focus of the site back to music. Hence the reshuffling of pages. The scopeboy.com domain name was originally bought to publicise my tunes after all. The hobby section of the site will still get updated now and again.

I recently heard that my musical Tesla coil vid got over 100,000 views on YouTube, so it looks like my electronics and music operations are entangled for good. Maybe I should start bringing it to gigs.

Who are you?

If you want to book me for a gig, try the music page.

If you want to give me a job, I've just left my old one at OptoSci and I'm now a research fellow in high voltage engineering at the Caley. Yes, high voltage research is now my day job! Maybe that musical Tesla coil wasn't such a waste of time after all.

I have done a fair bit of freelance work in the past, but I'm so busy now that I'm currently not accepting any more consulting work.

Why did you bother making a website?

I first got one in the mid-nineties. I discovered that my Unix account at the university computer centre came with space for a homepage, so I tried creating one to learn about HTML and the like. Originally it just had a picture of me and my pet rabbit Pete, but it grew gradually. scopeboy.com now serves a steady few GB per month of high voltage-electronic-musical goodness. It is hosted on Linux by 1121.org hosting in Maine.

Pete died in 2002.

Why the odd domain name?

When I outgrew the university web space I decided to buy a domain. At that time I was doing consulting work for a small company. They had no oscilloscope, and the work we were doing needed one, so I lent them mine and they called me Scope Boy from then on. "Doglet" got his domain name through a similar process.

Why does your site look so clunky and old-fashioned?

It's all written by hand in HTML using a text editor. I do know about more modern ways of creating pages, but I just haven't bothered trying to learn them. (edit: I learnt some PHP last week- yay!) This site is for sharing things with other people that I found interesting or funny, not for showcasing my (lack of) talent as a web designer.
